How do you sell a first retreat from a brand nobody has heard of?
A retreat is an expensive purchase made almost entirely on trust, and a new company has no track record to trade on. The brand had to do the reassuring before the business could exist.
Selling a retreat is not like selling a product. Someone is asked to spend thousands of dollars and a week of their leave, travel somewhere unfamiliar and live with strangers, on the strength of a promise they cannot verify. Every brand in the category makes the same promise in the same voice: transformation, journey, soft focus, a lot of beige. When everyone sounds identical and none of them are known, the buyer has nothing to choose on except price, and price is the worst thing to be chosen on.
So the brand had to carry the reassurance the track record could not, and it had to exist before the first retreat sold. We built it from the name out: a name, a mark that is literally a smile, a palette that is bright and unembarrassed where the category is muted and solemn, and a voice that says “life gets noisy” rather than “begin your journey”. The line, Disconnect to Reconnect, states the benefit in the customer’s own words and makes the argument in four. The brand descriptors were held to eight, and everything was checked against them: minimal, clean, light, uplifting, modern, relevant, fun, unique.
The go-to-market followed the same logic. A three-year roadmap published up front, Hana then Carmel then Iceland, so the company reads as ongoing rather than opportunistic. Early-bird pricing to reward the people willing to go first. A Summer Wellness Series of local pop-ups around Los Angeles, which is the part that matters most: it lets people meet the brand for an afternoon before they are asked to book a flight, and it turns trust into something that can be earned in stages rather than asked for all at once.
Washed & Folded was engaged for the naming, the brand and identity, the website and the go-to-market.
