How do you sell a product in a category that does not exist yet?
Shark had won the fan category and needed to leave it. A device that is three cooling technologies at once has no shelf, no comparison set and no shorthand, so the work had to make a new category legible before it could make it desirable.
Shark had established itself as the innovation leader in fans, which is exactly the problem with staying there. Growth meant leaving the category, and the Chill Pill was built to do it: a high-speed fan, a dry-touch mister and a contact cooling plate in one handheld device. The brief called it a category of one. That is a real claim and also a real liability, because a buyer cannot want something they cannot classify, and three technologies presented as three technologies read as a spec sheet rather than a reason.
So we did not lead with the technology. We led with the heat. A taxi with no air moving in it, a subway platform, an airport terminal, a hot sidewalk and a melting ice cream: ordinary moments where the discomfort is specific and instantly recognisable. Naming the enemy gives the product one job instead of three, and it turns a fan, a mister and a cooling plate into a single benefit the audience already wants. The casting and wardrobe carried the rest, positioning the device as something worn rather than operated, closer to an accessory than an appliance.
The campaign was built global and localised by region, and delivered as a system rather than a spot: two thirty-second films, a fashion-led cutdown and a technology-led cutdown, a retail sizzle, and every asset finished in 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 so nothing needed reformatting after the fact. One argument, every channel, in the shape each platform expects.
I directed the campaign for SharkNinja: the OLV films, the retail sizzle and the cutdown system across every platform format.
A product with no category has a positioning problem, not an awareness problem. Name the enemy and the features stop competing with each other.
